Board says Sunset Beach closure for 4/20 damage may not take ten weeks as predicted.

The Vancouver park board’s closure Saturday of the Sunset Beach lawn — following Friday’s massive 4/20 cannabis festival — may not last the full 10 weeks as announced, according to the board’s chair.

Stuart MacKinnon, chair of the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation, told StarMetro staff they were not yet able to accurately assess how much damage had been done to the seaside park after tens of thousands of revellers came to the West End for the annual pot rally.

“The field is saturated at the moment so until it dries out we can’t do a full study of it,” MacKinnon said in a phone interview Sunday. “We hope it’s open before Canada day. I’m sure it will be.”

Park board commissioner Mike Wiebe had told StarMetro on Saturday the city was satisfied with the state of the field.
